One of the challenges with implementation in (large) organizations is the lack of strategic research-based implementation. All too often the management teams rely on workshop-based trainings for the staff and think that will suffice to make a difference in the service they provide for their service users. A shared experience in the MINT community and well described in the implementation literature is that it takes more effort from organizations to implement a new way of working. Fixsen and colleagues describe success-factors in implementation in the form of a triangle where each side of the triangle is equally important. The three sides are as follows
Competence; workshops, coaching, local “MI champions”, in-house Train the Trainer etc.
Organization; How the organization prioritize time and money, follow up, policy documents etc.
Leadership; encouragement when MI is being used, follow up for colleagues that struggling with MI, expresses engagement for the implementation of MI, allocates time and money according to the organizational decisions etc
The IMPLEMENTATION DECK is designed as a tool for organizations (managers, management teams, staff teams etc) to analyze their own implementation process and gain insight in what of the area’s competence, organization or leadership they have their strengths and their areas for development. I tend to use the deck together with managers and senior management teams when I work with them as a consultant. These are usually organizations that want to bring in MI as part of the service that they give but they are struggling to see the result that they were hoping for. What I particularly like about working with the deck is that it gives the managers or teams a way to analyze their own organization and come up with their own answers about what they need to do next. Instead of me as the consultant telling them what they need to do.
IMPLEMENTATION DECK, developed by Tobias Sandberg and Christina Näsholm, is based on the work by Dean F. Fixsen and KarenBlase and their concept “Implementation Drivers”. It consists of a deck of cards and a game board to be used in MI-conversations regarding systematic implementation.
